Sweet Chick, brunch

I have completely fallen off.  For more reasons than I can even list.  Day by day, I’m going to try to catch up.  My son had a random Friday off and I decided to go here with him.  I heard the chicken and waffles were good.  He had scrambled eggs with cheese, home fries and toast.  It was normal, nothing spectacular.  My chicken was super moist and seasoned wonderfully.  The waffle was light and crisp. The butters on the side were delish.  Blueberry,  lemon and herb.  We also had the mac and cheese, it was so hot and cheesy,  it was great.  He had fresh brewed peach iced tea, I had apple ginger soda, it was amazing.  I would go back and try a more savory dish.

Lunch, Hotel Americano

We had a celebratory lunch for a coworker.  This is the place she choose, it’s close to our office.  I have passed it many times and always said I’d go, this was the puch I needed.  They have a prefix lunch, I wasn’t that thrilled with the options.  I ordered an amazing drink with tequila, mango and smoked chipotle salt on the rim.  A vodka based drink with fresh fruit, it was a little sweet.  Another drink that had cucumber in it.  That drink was refreshingly light.  We ordered,  fish tacos, a chicken club, a chicken sandwich and a chicken quesadilla.  The tacos were good, more of an appetizer, there was only two per order.  The sandwiches were served with salad in a light dressing reminiscent of vinaigrette but much lighter.  The regular sandwich had melted white cheese, avocado and a chipotle spread,  I am a super fan of all three.  The bread was toasted to perfection.  The club had thick cut bacon and another tasty sauce.  They sent over a chocolate mousse dessert for the birthday girl.  That was nice, it was whipped perfectly.   Definitely will go back, the ambiance was really nice, they have a back yard.  We spent about forty dollars per person.

Graduation lunch, Del Friscos

My friend graduated, this May.  To celebrate we went to lunch at Del Friscos.  My friend was trying to get there, this was the perfect opportunity.  Once seated the waitress showed us the cocktail of the day.  It was a pineapple martini.  There was a huge glass jar filled with vodka and pineapple on the bar.  She immediately ordered one, I decided to skip alcohol this afternoon.  As I perused the menu I found ‘business lunch’, perfect.  I ordered a caesar salad, salmon and a chocolate mousse for dessert.  My friend ordered lobster bisque, lobster mac and cheese, a signature dish and shrimp scampi.  Our appetizers came out first, the salad was crisp and I enjoyed the shredded cheese on it. The bisque had lobster you could actually see.  We enjoyed both.  The mac came out next, piping hot and the immediately serve it to you.  It was delicious,  the right blend of cheeses and again lobster you can see and taste.   My salmon was cooked perfectly, the edges were crispy and the seasoning was light.  The shrimp were huge, the pasta was tossed just right with sauce.  The sauce was creamy, with a touch of garlic.   They surprised my friend with a free dessert,  to acknowledge her accomplishment.  We ended up with the mousse and cheesecake!  The mousse was chocolatey and airy.  The cheesecake was rich and tasty.  I would definitely go back for dinner and drinks.

Late night snack, Hoja Santa.

There have been quite a few moments where I’ve had a little more alone time then I wanted.  I have been making the best of it and going out by myself.  I saw a pic of a taco with mac and cheese, fried chicken and collard greens.  I decided to try it.  I grab a seat at the bar and order a classic margarita.  It was served with a spicy salt rim, delicious!  I order guacamole while I waited for my tacos, it was a big portion.  I find that I crave a little heat in my guac, besides missing that it was great.  Flavorful, enough to really dip the chips which were warm I enjoyed it.  I took the rest of the guac home an it was still great the next day.  The tacos were amazing.  They were served with a side of hot sauce the ultimate combination.  The mac and cheese could use a stronger cheese in it. It was soft which fit for the taco.  I would go back for a full meal and more drinks.

Bonus Post!! Aqua Bar and Grille, Tampa

Last year I needed a warm and sunny break and happened upon Tampa.  I try to go a least twice a year now.  There’s a Waffle House, Chick-fil-a and I always find chili cheese Fritos all my down south faves.  This visit I ran into my dear friend, we met up for dinner.  Aqua was recommended by the hotel staff.  It was in the lobby of the Westin, it was beautifully decorated.  I was a little under the weather,  very rare for me.  My appetite was on the light side.  I went with a soup and salad.  I still startwwith a dragon berry mojito,  sick or not I needed a drink.  My partner had an Iced Coconut,  it was pretty good, very strong.  I had a salad that had everything in it, apples, goat cheese,  candied walnuts and a champagne vinaigrette.  It was great.  I had the chef’s soup which was butternut squash.  It was pureed nicely, had hints of nutmeg and cinnamon but not a sweet soup.  I also had the brussel sprouts,  they have become my new favorite vegetable.  They were roasted and slightly sweet.  My partner had calamari to start and steak with seasonal roasted veggies and black rice.  The calamari was crispy a little lack luster on taste.  The steak and veggies were both cooked well and were alright.  The black rice was amazing.  A hint of sweet, the rice was cooked perfectly best part of the meal.  I skipped dessert,  I barely made it through my dishes.  I would go again, have a full course meal including dessert.  Being sick, my menu choices were a little off.  The ambiance was really nice too, open kitchen big booths and they have outside seating.

Ricardo’s Steak House, birthday dinner

My very dear friend turned 30 this year. She went to Puerto Rico on a couple’s trip, I love that.  We got to celebrate upon her return.  She is a lover of meat and choose Ricardo’s for her celebratory dinner.  I was on time, she was her standard late.  I ordered a strawberry Patron margarita, while I waited.  In my haste to order I forgot to get salt on my rim, it was great without it.  She ordered a pink colada, the waitress warned her it would be weak and wasn’t the best drink.  She was absolutely right, it was mediocre.  The garlic bread was grilled with butter, it was crisp and warm, great combination. We skipped appetizers,  we both have been here before. She ordered the Ricardo’s special platter, skirt steak, pork chop, plantains, mashed potatoes and rice and beans.  Although she enjoyed it, it was a lot of food. She shared her plantain and rice and beans with me and still had a plate to go home.  I ordered the chicken piccata.  It was served with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies.  The veggies were great, the mash was okay, it was a little cold.  The chicken was amazing, no complaints. It’s a birthday dinner,  so there had to be dessert. She ordered cheesecake with fresh strawberries and I ordered the crepe. Her’s came with a firecracker like candle,  it was a nice touch.  My crepe was more like a burrito filled with an espresso filling,  fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream on the side.  I was disappointed in my dessert.  I am a foodie and was looking forward to the light airy crispness of a crepe.  All in all I enjoyed my meal.  This was my second time here, I would definitely go again.  Next time, I will skip dessert and have a salad instead.

Birthday dinner, Macao Trading

I absolutely love birthdays, with them come dinner and usually cake but always some sort of dessert.  My sister and my niece are a day apart. This year my niece turned five and my son had a Boy Scout event the same weekend. My sister decided to go away,  I couldn’t go Mommy duties over sister duties. No worries my sister had a restaurant picked out and reservations made for dinner. The four of us, my mom, two sister’s and I were all on time, amazing.  We ordered three drinks, the Hong Kong,  No Mames and Dr. Funk. I loved the names of all thier drinks, they have an extensive drink menu.  I may have mentioned I am a tequila girl, two of those drinks were tequila based and the other was rum based.  The drinks were awesome!  We ordered a few appetizers. Kale salad,  it had these crispy homemade potato chips that they called croutons.  I was an immediate fan of the salad.   Steamed dumplings,  they were steamed dumplings.  The shrimp was served in the pan it was cooked in with a fantastic bread served in the side.  Mushroom croquettes, I don’t like mushrooms if I see them. These were pretty good. The dipping sauce probably won me over.  Mains!! I got African chicken with slaw.  It was so good.  The sauce was really tasty and not over powering.  The slaw was the perfect cool compliment. Birthday girl had lobster,  there was none left.  My mother had Hakka noodles with vegetables.   She enjoyed it, it had to have a kick to it.  She isn’t satisfied unless there’s some heat.  My sister had Hake, he fish was light and flaky. I thought it could use a little heat, it had a nice flavor.  We had long beans, bok choy and black rice.  The black rice was divine, it surprised me. The veggies were seasoned well.  Desserts!! We had two Diablo chocolate desserts and malasadas, like a beignet.  The Diablo Thai chili chocolate with this super thin brittle on it.  Not sure words can describe how delicious it was. The birthday girl got a Tropical storm dessert,  rum soaked fruit with a ginger whipped cream.  Ginger is one of her favourites.  This meal was great.  This place has a lounge downstairs,  so the party could continue. I would love to go back, more drinks and definitely dessert.

Bonus post!! Taste of Chicago, part two.

I woke up on the morning of day two with my whole day planned.  I had breakfast downstairs at Angels and Kings. Buttermilk pancakes with orange butter, maple syrup and turkey sausage. Everything was delish,  I love when everything is served hot.  I then took a cab to Shedd Aquarium, I love aquariums and try to visit every city I go to.  After the aquarium I walked back to Taste for a few quick bites. I had a tequila lime taco, corn on the cob, a nutella filled crepe,  a slice of cheesecake, fried mustard catfish, buffalo boneless chicken and fresh cut fries with a carrot aioli. The aioli was divine, the chicken was too spicy for me, I can usually do heat, so I was disappointed, I only ate two.  The corn was so fresh and the crepe was made to order so it was super hot and yummy.  I love tequila anyway adding a taco to the mix just warms my heart.  The catfish was like grandma used to make divine.  I also found a crazy assortment of hot chips. I posted a pic below.  I found the Garrett Popcorn,  it originated in Chicago so I had the authentic Chicago Mix, saved it for my plane ride home.  For my first ‘big girl’ trip, I had a ball.  I would like to go back to do a little more sight seeing.

PS I was out there for 7/11, got my free slurpee!

Side what? Sidecar

I saw this place on a television show.  I figured hey, it’s in Brooklyn and looks interesting. Went online, saw something on the menu that called my name. My home girl from Boston was coming into to town and I figured we’d go there for brunch.  It was crowded and a thirty minute wait. We opted to sit on high chairs by the open kitchen.  I found a vanilla vodka based drink, it was light perfect for brunch.  I ordered the Migas,  it’s basically a Mexican inspired egg dish. The guacamole was tasty, it could use a kick of heat though. The tortillas were served warm. My friend ordered a bunch of sides.  Nothing on the menu was that interesting for her.  Cheese grits, a biscuit, eggs, sausage and home fries. The biscuit was average,  the home fries were a little crisper than I would’ve preferred. The cheese grits were really good.  I saw a few drinks that were interesting and the fried chicken sounds good. Not sure that’s enough for me to make my way back anytime soon.
