I moved to East Flatbush over a decade ago and the landscape and name both have changed. I randomly saw this restaurant pop up near my house and decided to try it. I got an egg and cheese frittata sandwich, with smashed avocado and I added fried chicken. The egg was a little burnt, like bottom of pan. Chicken was cooked perfectly. I had a latte, it was amazing. I would go back try a hard cider, not a beer drinker.

Savvy
On my drive home from work on Sundays, I pass this restaurant. I was meeting the girls for happy hour and figured we could try this place. The server was nice, but uninformative. When we decided to order food they were out of chicken. Like, no wings, chicken for tacos, no chicken in the building. They also were out of whole salmon, so the salmon tacos we ordered I’m pretty sure the salmon was from a can. It would’ve been been helpful to know that prior to looking at the menu. I ended up ordering nothing. My frineds got crab cakes, they were dry. Salmon tacos, they were ok but it was chopped up like tuna. Shrimp tacos, the shrimps were cut in half. Overall, very disappointed. I wouldn’t go here again on my own.
Butter and Scotch, aka Drunk Bakers
I stumbled upon this place on Instagram. They’re known as the drunk bakers, they have the most insane cake sayings. Because the are a bar as well, I had to make my way. Went on Saturday evening, bar was full sat a table in the back. Browsed through the menu decided on a drink with mezcal and citrus. Usually not a big fan, I was hoping the citrus would make it interesting. It absolutely did, the drink also had a cute S stamped on it. The smores pie was absolutely divine. The torched marshmallow tasted almost like creme brulee. The brown butter cookie was the buttery and yummy. Popcorn got spicer as the bowl emptied. The funky saying cakes were not on display, it truly is a bar. They do serve almost all desserts, including boozy shakes and jello shots. I would go back to have actual cake. Everything I had was really good.
Shorty’s
I’ve been here twice, once for an early dinner and the other for a late lunch. Their claim to fame is the hero bread which they get from Philly daily. I don’t eat red meat, so chicken steaks with provolone, peppers and onions for me. The bread was good it was soft. I had the Italian cheese fries, they were amazing. They came out first and pipping hot. The next time I tried the cheese fries, not my favorite. They have so many different fries, I will keep trying til I’ve had all of them so far the Italian ones are my favorite. I like hard cider, they have one on tap perfcet compliment to my meal. They just opened one in Brooklyn, so my next trip will be to that one.
Glow Thai
I saw a picture of a glowing drink online somewhere and followed it to this place. The ambience wasn’t anything special, I almost thought I had the wrong place. The drink menu was very creative, I had two of them. One was a glowy kind of green and the other was smoky and had crushed and vodka infused gummy bears. Both drinks were delicious. For appetizers mussels served with rice, could have easily been a full meal and soy garlic wings. I only had the broth and veggies, not into mussels but it was really tasty. The wings were temperature hot and so crispy, they were perfect. A half crispy duck and basil fried rice with chicken for main courses. The sauce the duck was in was so good, the rice was cooked with the perfect amount of heat I’m glad asked for mild spice. Anymore would have made it unenjoyable. For dessert, fried ice cream!!! I would definitely go back to try some other drinks and dishes.
Cupcakes! Brooklyn Cupcakes
For months I have been driving by Brooklyn Cupcakes. It’s on my way to football practice, I always say I’m going. Finally for my sisters birthday, that’s what she wanted. She wanted a french toast flavor, I thought that sounded interesting. When I got there I was overwhelmed by the different flavors. Coquito, tres leches, flan con quava just to name a few. I got the french toast, they added syrup on top (optional ), samoas, tres leches, guava and one vanilla. They were all amazing. They cake was light, moist and the frostings were not over powering. Definitely going back, there’s more flavors to try. They were also reasonably priced, $15 for half dozen.

River Styx, Dinner
So ten years ago my little sister went off to college. Ten years later, she’s moving back to her college town. She really fell in love with it, although being back in Brooklyn was helpful to her career, it was never home again. To celebrate, going out to eat was the only option. We had no real clue where to go, we did want to keep it local. I told her to Google the menu for River Styx, she saw oysters and was immediately thrilled. They had a few interesting drinks on the cocktail menu, we started with that. I had a tequila based, she had a rum based. Mine was super strong, one and done. She went on to have a second cocktail of a different background, it had ginger in it. Oysters and a kale salad to start. I probably could have stopped after the salad. It was so good, it had a soft smoked cheese on the bottom, it was amazing. I also ordered nachos with chicken. The chicken was really good, it was moist, it must have been roasted. I only ate half, the salad was so filling. She had a pasta dish with mussels. They change the menu, daily, call ahead if you’re looking for a particular dish. Definitely would go back. It’s right on the water, beautiful views outside.
Toms, breakfast all day
Once in a while, I want a diner style full breakfast, I go to Tom’s on Washington. There’s always a wait, it’s usually not that long. I have never been disappointed. The pancakes are great, I love a good pancake. My son gets the belgian waffle, it’s cooked perfectly. Definitely a great regular spot to go to. The price is right too.

Wingbar, Saturday night
Over the past few years, I have become slightly obsessed with finding great wings. I usually find the best wings at non wing specific restaurants. Now this place has great wings. They are fried and tossed to order. They were crispy, hot and the flavor was just right. I had buffalo and bbq, they were both really good. I ordered fried pickles, they had a little too much dough for me. The pickles themselves were good. I had two margaritas, that’s what I drink. It was the typical bar atmosphere, they had college football on. Cold drinks, hot food, great time.
