Dinner at Sons of Essex

Happy 30th! To celebrate my homegirl’s birthday she choose to dine at Sons of Essex. Fantastic cocktail menu and wide variety of southern flair foods. We ordered a little of everything. Deviled eggs, wings, mac and cheese and calamari to start.  All were great.  Mains, rib eye, lamb chops (lollipop style), fried chicken and braised short ribs. The gremelata on the rib eye was overwhelming. It was coated in it. May have been better on the side or as more of a dipping sauce. (See pic below) The fried chicken was great with the hot sauce, it was hot, crispy could have used more seasoning.  The lamb chops were perfect as well as the short rib. The biscuits were okay, cornbread was good. The brussel sprouts were delicious. Roasted corn was okay.  For dessert we had Nutella panini, cheese cake and chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The panini bread was a little to crispy for me. The cake was delicious and adding ice cream to the panini was much better.  They did a wonderful job of making the birthday girl feel special, name on chalkboard and a sparkler. The cocktails and appetizers definitely worth the trip back.

Cupcakes! Brooklyn Cupcakes

For months I have been driving by Brooklyn Cupcakes. It’s on my way to football practice, I always say I’m going. Finally for my sisters birthday, that’s what she wanted.  She wanted a french toast flavor, I thought that sounded interesting. When I got there I was overwhelmed by the different flavors. Coquito, tres leches, flan con quava just to name a few. I got the french toast, they added syrup on top (optional ), samoas, tres leches, guava and one vanilla. They were all amazing. They cake was light, moist and the frostings were not over powering. Definitely going back, there’s more flavors to try. They were also reasonably priced, $15 for half dozen.

Emack and Bolio’s, Ice Cream Dream

A while ago, I saw a picture of fruity pebbles on a waffle cone dripping with ice cream. Not really a fan of that cereal but I knew there was more that lied behind that. I was right, there’s rice and cocoa krispies and cinnamon toast crunch to go along with the aforementioned. The ice cream flavors are just as imaginative. I usually have a salted caramel,  because salted caramel. I chose a vanilla ice cream with chocolate covered pretzels and a caramel swirl with rice and cocoa krispies waffle cone.  It was magical. I only had one scoop. It was creamy, the cone was amazing. Definitely worth the $8. I will absolutely travel to the upper east side, just for this treat.

Brunch at Franks, Prime Meats

Saturday seems to be my brunch day. My girlfriend was in town, we hit the streets early around 11. There was no wait, and they had inside seating under a beautiful skylight. Over the hostess table was a sign for a punch, I saw tequila and immediately was elated. Once we were seated I asked the waiter it was leftover from the previous nights special. Slightly disappointed, I ordered a mimosa, my girlfriend order the punch of the day. Both drinks were good.  They make a pretzel, it’s warm, with grain mustard and salted butter, amazing. It’s on the menu twice, it is a favorite.  I went with an egg white omelet, it had fresh herbs and was served with pickled onions and avocado.  The combo was great, very savory. The farmer’s breakfast, on of their signature dishes, sunnyside up eggs, three kinds of meat, potatoes and toast. She ordered the eggs scrambled the concept was still the same.  For dessert we had pancakes, the were delicious. Light fluffy, just enough powdered sugar and served hot. They had a couple of other interesting dishes.  I would go back again for dinner and drinks.

Clover Club, Brunch

For brunch, I do prefer to stay local,  Brooklyn!  My girlfriend from Boston was visiting and recommended this place.  We had a array of items, I of course had the fried chicken. It was hot, crispy and had an amazing hot honey sauce on it.  We had pancakes at the end of our meal like dessert, they were really good.  They served homemade potato chips with my son’s breakfast sandwich. We had two types of baked egg dishes. Grits with cheese, deviled eggs and potato pancakes were our sides. I had a tequila based drink, my usual.  I enjoyed the chicken, deviled eggs and pancakes the most. If I wasn’t on a quest to try as many restaurants as possible I would definitely go back.

Pompano, unlimited brunch (2 hours)

Unlimited brunch, it’s now 2 hours and $43. It’s actually enough time to feel fantastic when you leave, so I won’t complain. The restaurant is really clean and pretty. There’s an outside patio that has seating.  I’m a fan of mexican food, guacamole, tequila all of it.  This place has all of the above. We ordered guacamole of course and pretty much one of everything on the menu. The chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and fried yucca were my favorites. They put a spicy citrus glaze on yucca, it was amazing. The tacos, fried plantain, pancakes and huevos ranchero were good as well.  I had margaritas, they were magnificent and flowing. Definitely will go back.

Chicken sandwich at Shake Shack

Shake Shack has introduced a fried chicken sandwich. It is sold in three stores right now.  It is so good.  The chicken is crispy, the lettuce and herb mayo just right.  The pickles taste homemade, I added onions. The hot and crispy chicken with the cool toppings made for an amazing sandwich.  I had a caramel shake, skipped the fries this time.  I will definitely be back.

Ice cream donut, Peter Pan donuts

I stumbled across a pic of an ice cream sandwich made with a donut. You can imagine my delight and zeel at the thought of the combination.  My son has football practice four days a week, the only joy is that there’s so much food in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. I had a salad and drinks at Bedford Hall, so this was dessert. It was amazing. I had an old fashion cake donut with vanilla bean ice cream(Häagen-Dazs).  The donut was perfect, just enough sweetness and crumble.  It looks like the old fashion donut shop, counter and all.  I will definitely go back for a different combination.

Queso! Javelina

Last year I went to Austin  (twice) and fell in love with Queso. They put that *ish on everything!!  I heard of a place up here that makes it.  To celebrate my completed 14 weeks of training, decided to try the queso.  It was amazing, almost as good as Texas.  I had a sangria margarita, it was just the right amount of sweet.  I ordered a chicken quesadilla, my son ordered a combination plate. It had a little of everything.  Everything came to the table hot.  I’m looking forward to going again, having more food and drinks.
