Restaurant week, Grotto Azzurra

Stepped outside my usual and went for Italian. I was pleasantly pleased with the food.  I ordered a tequila based drink, it was refreshing.  They didn’t have the pumpkin ravioli, I was a little disappointed. I got the spinach salad which was really good.  It was served in a cheese bowl, yum!  My homegirl ordered the salmon crostini for an app.  It was served on thick french bread, way bigger than the usual crostini. She could only eat two.  For our mains, salmon and a shrimp pasta dish both had a brandy based sauces. The salmon was cooked well, it had a grain mustard sauce, it was delightful. The sides were good.  I’m not a fan of shrimp, although her dish was well seasoned.  Dessert, now I skipped over the tartufo only because I saw creme brulee. Now when I saw the tartufo I was shocked. It was a chocolate shell, with ice cream in the middle.  It looked amazing. The first order came out with berries and my homegirl is deathly allergic. The second one was a different flavor, it was fine but she wanted the first flavor minus the berries. There seemed to be a loss in translation at that point.  My dessert was great. I would definitely get two desserts next time.

Dinner at Sons of Essex

Happy 30th! To celebrate my homegirl’s birthday she choose to dine at Sons of Essex. Fantastic cocktail menu and wide variety of southern flair foods. We ordered a little of everything. Deviled eggs, wings, mac and cheese and calamari to start.  All were great.  Mains, rib eye, lamb chops (lollipop style), fried chicken and braised short ribs. The gremelata on the rib eye was overwhelming. It was coated in it. May have been better on the side or as more of a dipping sauce. (See pic below) The fried chicken was great with the hot sauce, it was hot, crispy could have used more seasoning.  The lamb chops were perfect as well as the short rib. The biscuits were okay, cornbread was good. The brussel sprouts were delicious. Roasted corn was okay.  For dessert we had Nutella panini, cheese cake and chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The panini bread was a little to crispy for me. The cake was delicious and adding ice cream to the panini was much better.  They did a wonderful job of making the birthday girl feel special, name on chalkboard and a sparkler. The cocktails and appetizers definitely worth the trip back.

Chicken sandwich at Shake Shack

Shake Shack has introduced a fried chicken sandwich. It is sold in three stores right now.  It is so good.  The chicken is crispy, the lettuce and herb mayo just right.  The pickles taste homemade, I added onions. The hot and crispy chicken with the cool toppings made for an amazing sandwich.  I had a caramel shake, skipped the fries this time.  I will definitely be back.

Queso! Javelina

Last year I went to Austin  (twice) and fell in love with Queso. They put that *ish on everything!!  I heard of a place up here that makes it.  To celebrate my completed 14 weeks of training, decided to try the queso.  It was amazing, almost as good as Texas.  I had a sangria margarita, it was just the right amount of sweet.  I ordered a chicken quesadilla, my son ordered a combination plate. It had a little of everything.  Everything came to the table hot.  I’m looking forward to going again, having more food and drinks.

To go post! Hill Country

I went to an event at Pranna on a Monday night.  They served a few bites, I was still hungry.  On my way to the train, I stopped at Hill Country.  I got chicken fingers, coleslaw and a biscuit.  I was disappointed.  The chicken was okay, it was juicy but lacked flavor.  The biscuit was tough and the coleslaw needed more flavor too.  I have no desire to go there again.  Flatiron has definitely lost me.  The average price for a meal is about $10.  There’s a Hill Country BBQ downtown Brooklyn.  It’s newer maybe it’s better.

To go post! 67 Burger

Every now and then I have a Saturday where I can lounge around.  Decided to get a burger on my way to the other side of town.  I called ahead for pick up, one beef, one turkey, curly fries and a cajun fry too.  By the time I got there, it was ready.  It was the Flatbush ave location, so being ready was a big plus.  The food was presented nicely, I liked the containers.  By the time I reached my destination the food was slightly warmer than room temperature.  I love that they have other cheeses besides american, cheddar was the way to go for me.  The burger was cooked well, it could have been seasoned a little bit more.  Both of the fries were great.  I have dined in before and there’s nothing like a hot burger and fries.  This was a pretty good take out experience.

The Lobster Joint, another birthday.

My son turned 11 this year.  He loves seafood, so I decided to take him to an all seafood place.  This place immediately came to mind.  We looked at the menu, my son quickly choose the lobster dinner.  We asked the girl at the register about the size and how its served.  Since I don’t eat lobster I needed for him to be able to take apart the whole thing by hiself.  She tells us of a half a lobster special with diavolo pasta.  He orders that and all the sides the lobster diner came with, corn on the cob, cole slaw and potatoes.  I ordered the fish and chips.  The side of the day was, cauliflower with capers and jalapenos, got that too.  My son ordered a lemonade,  I ordered one with tequila.  We choose our seats at the front by the window.  Our food arrived and everything was hot.  The crisp on that fish was unbelievable.  The taste was even better.  The fries were good too.  I tasted the lobster it was okay, I’ll never be a fan.  My son devoured it.  The pasta was great, just enough spice to not be overwhelming.  The corn was sweet, the cole slaw needed more mayo and some black pepper.  The potatoes were great, they were seasoned with thyme.  The cauliflower was so good.  Theat jalapeno and caper mixture was amazing.  I have a thing about homemade pickles.  They were so yummy.  My drink never came.  So I asked for a ginger beer to go instead.  It was real beer, a spicy version.  It was cold and refreshing.  They refunded my money and gave me the beer on the house.  I thought that was nice.  This place is nice and simple.  There is a outdoor garden area in the back.  I have to go back to take my mother, she doesn’t eat meat.  There’s about three non seafood items on the menu.

Graduation lunch, Del Friscos

My friend graduated, this May.  To celebrate we went to lunch at Del Friscos.  My friend was trying to get there, this was the perfect opportunity.  Once seated the waitress showed us the cocktail of the day.  It was a pineapple martini.  There was a huge glass jar filled with vodka and pineapple on the bar.  She immediately ordered one, I decided to skip alcohol this afternoon.  As I perused the menu I found ‘business lunch’, perfect.  I ordered a caesar salad, salmon and a chocolate mousse for dessert.  My friend ordered lobster bisque, lobster mac and cheese, a signature dish and shrimp scampi.  Our appetizers came out first, the salad was crisp and I enjoyed the shredded cheese on it. The bisque had lobster you could actually see.  We enjoyed both.  The mac came out next, piping hot and the immediately serve it to you.  It was delicious,  the right blend of cheeses and again lobster you can see and taste.   My salmon was cooked perfectly, the edges were crispy and the seasoning was light.  The shrimp were huge, the pasta was tossed just right with sauce.  The sauce was creamy, with a touch of garlic.   They surprised my friend with a free dessert,  to acknowledge her accomplishment.  We ended up with the mousse and cheesecake!  The mousse was chocolatey and airy.  The cheesecake was rich and tasty.  I would definitely go back for dinner and drinks.

Late night snack, Hoja Santa.

There have been quite a few moments where I’ve had a little more alone time then I wanted.  I have been making the best of it and going out by myself.  I saw a pic of a taco with mac and cheese, fried chicken and collard greens.  I decided to try it.  I grab a seat at the bar and order a classic margarita.  It was served with a spicy salt rim, delicious!  I order guacamole while I waited for my tacos, it was a big portion.  I find that I crave a little heat in my guac, besides missing that it was great.  Flavorful, enough to really dip the chips which were warm I enjoyed it.  I took the rest of the guac home an it was still great the next day.  The tacos were amazing.  They were served with a side of hot sauce the ultimate combination.  The mac and cheese could use a stronger cheese in it. It was soft which fit for the taco.  I would go back for a full meal and more drinks.
